In 1858, in a rocky grotto outside the small town of Lourdes, France, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. She came not to the powerful or celebrated, but to a poor young girl whose simple faith would help make Lourdes one of the great places of pilgrimage in the Catholic world.

When Bernadette asked the mysterious Lady her name, Mary answered:

“I am the Immaculate Conception.”

The message of Lourdes is one of prayer, penance, conversion, and profound trust in God. For generations, the sick and suffering have journeyed there seeking Our Lady’s intercession—not only for healing of the body, but for the deeper healing of the soul.

Lourdes also held a special place in the spiritual life of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. His lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother brought him to Lourdes more than thirty times, and he made a point of returning to the shrine during his travels in Europe. For Sheen, devotion to Mary was never separated from Christ; his episcopal motto, Da per Matrem me venire—“Grant that I may come to You through the Mother”—expressed a spirituality that marked his priesthood and apostolate throughout his life.

The Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary draws from the quiet beauty of the grotto itself.
