From slavery to sainthood, the life of St. Josephine Bakhita is one of the most extraordinary stories of freedom, forgiveness, and hope in the modern Church.

Born in Sudan and kidnapped as a child, Bakhita endured years of enslavement, violence, and suffering before eventually gaining her freedom in Italy. There she encountered the Catholic faith, was baptized, and entered the Canossian Daughters of Charity. The woman who had once been treated as property ultimately discovered what she called the true “Master” she had unknowingly longed for all her life: Jesus Christ.

From Slavery to the Freedom of Christ

Bakhita was kidnapped in Sudan while still a young girl and sold repeatedly into slavery. The trauma was so severe that she eventually forgot the name her parents had given her. Her captors called her “Bakhita,” meaning “fortunate.”

Her life was anything but fortunate by ordinary standards. She suffered brutal treatment and bore the physical scars of her captivity for the rest of her life.

Yet suffering did not have the final word.

After being taken to Italy, Bakhita encountered the Canossian Sisters and began learning about Christianity. When an attempt was later made to compel her to return to Africa with the family that claimed ownership over her, Italian authorities determined that she had never legally been a slave under Italian law. For the first time since childhood, Bakhita was free.

She chose Christ.

Baptized Josephine Margaret Fortunata, she eventually entered the Canossian Sisters and spent the remainder of her life in religious service.

The Beauty of Elephant Skin Jasper

The Elephant Skin Jasper Our Father beads are particularly striking in this design. Their swirling shades of rust, brown, ochre, and earth give each bead a distinctive appearance against the dark espresso birch.

That does not make the evil committed against her good. It reveals something far more radical: evil did not get to determine who Bakhita became.

The child who was kidnapped, sold, beaten, and deprived even of her own name became Sister Josephine Bakhita—and eventually Saint Josephine Bakhita.

Her life is a testimony that in Christ, slavery does not have the last word.
